The Final 1966 Timeline
March 1966 Assembly: The final ten units—all 356 SC Cabriolets—were assembled during this month specifically for the Dutch National Police (Rijkspolitie).
May 1966 Delivery: These ten vehicles officially left the Zuffenhausen factory and were delivered to their "special customers" in May 1966, marking the absolute end of the 356's 17-year production life.
Why the numbers sometimes varyThe "Final 10" (Dutch Police Order): These are the most famous 1966 units. Porsche explicitly documented a final run of 10 356 SC Cabriolets specifically for the Dutch National Police (Rijkspolitie) because the department initially rejected the new 911.
The "Last 15" (Late Assembly): Some older registries and enthusiasts occasionally refer to the "last 15" to account for a small handful of cars (roughly 5) that were physically completed in late 1965 but not officially delivered, invoiced, or titled until 1966.
Why the Cabriolet Body?The Dutch police specifically ordered the Cabriolet (convertible) because they required an open-top vehicle. This allowed officers to stand up in their seats while the car was moving to direct traffic or signal other motorists without having to exit the vehicle. This unique requirement is what kept the 356 in production into 1966, a full year after the 911 had replaced it for the general public.
