Smith glass figural green swan bowl/dish/candy dish, circa 1930s.

• The Pattern: Often referred to by collectors simply as the L.E. Smith No. 3 Swan Dish or "Open Back Swan".
• Distinguishing Feature: One of the most defining characteristics of the L.E. Smith swan mold is the painted beak.

Uranium glass. Green glass produced by L.E. Smith during this period was formulated with a small amount of uranium oxide, meaning it will fluoresce an intense, vibrant neon green when exposed to an ultraviolet (UV) blacklight.

Classification: (This piece has a few mold lines.)
• It is Pressed Glass: Physically, this is pressed glass (also known as molded glass). It was manufactured by pouring molten glass into a metallic mold and pressing it with a plunger to create the textured feather details

Age
This specific swan mold was first introduced in the 1930s during the Depression glass era. L.E. Smith continued to produce versions of it into the 1940s and 1950s. Because of its specific light green color profile and the style of the factory-painted orange bill, this swan most likely dates right back to its original production period from the 1930s to the 1940s, making it roughly 75 to 95 years old.

Have a Question?
