Original handles maybe splitting, thus the black tape, we recommend removing the tape and using something like thin wire wrapped around the handle to preserve the wood holding together but showing it off. Also you could clear urethane to preserve the wood.
The blade has an old patent date, however you would have to take it apart to see all of the markings.
